CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT--THIS WOMAN AND HER WELLNESS APP CAN SHOW YOU "HOW"

meet Miki Ash, renowned artist, yoga, and meditation teacher who is a self-described citizen of the world and has been a game changer in the global yoga community via her instagram for several years. her #1 goal? to remind you how damn important you are.

from heading up retreats to capturing her signature light and airy photography to blogging about all things wellness to selling journals, jewelry, meditation gifts and guides, miki has got her plate full—and she wants to make sure shares a bite with her world-wide audience. to help with this mission, she launched her app,
the HOW, a place for wellness, a place for self-discovery and self-liberation, “a place you can go where you *know* you will leave feeling better.” inspiration, at attention.

Outside of *how* she’s bringing more wellness to the digital world, miki is a woman who is charming, vulnerable and incredibly altruistic. her down-to-earth realness is what started her on to her own path of healing and it’s what’s helped her help others in the process. we chatted with her about how her upbringing helped her shape her life, the downfalls of social media, and the advice she has for anyone scared to take the next step.

the void: What drew you into the wellness and yoga industry?

Miki Ash: to be completely honest, a lack of direction and purpose. I found yoga by accident. I was so exhausted with my own depression, I didn’t know what else to do with myself, and yoga became my saving grace. It was the first time I’d ever wanted to take care of myself, to move my body, to be present. I always wanted to escape myself and then I finally felt like being with myself. It brought me a sense of lightness that I had never felt before.

TV: That’s a beautiful moment of self-discovery right there. What was it that made you decide to live life by your own standards and really create a life you love, especially when there can be pressure for young women to follow a more traditional career path?

MA: My family is very unconventional. My father was an immigrant from Israel who moved here at 16 years old, escaping the Israeli army. He bought his first house at age 18 and a house for his mother at age 19. Both of my parents are very creative and clever, and neither of them went to college or had a traditional career, so I always knew that there were other alternatives from what so many people believe is the ‘only way.’

I feel so grateful; they always urged me to uncover what I am passionate about and follow my heart. I would present my parents with a PowerPoint of my plans and they would say, “ok, go do it!” I was never pressured into doing anything that I didn’t want to, and grew up surrounded by creativity.

When I was 18, instead of going to a college—where I didn’t know what I wanted to study—I decided to travel and moved to Paris to do an internship with a clothing brand. Although that’s obviously not the career path that I am on now, it showed me that I am capable of moving about this world on my own. There is so much to see and experience, and just because everyone else around me isn’t doing the same thing, it doesn’t mean I can't go on my own adventures.

TV: What’s been the hardest part of staying on your own path?

MA: Comparison. Social media doesn’t make it easy when everyone is putting their best, most curated selves on display. At times I have felt that I am not doing enough, or I am not successful or creative or valuable enough, but as soon as I refocus on my purpose and how much I have accomplished, it becomes much easier to feel good about my life and what I’ve created and am creating.

TV: You travel so much! Have you ever gotten intimidated to travel on your own?

MA: I have traveled on my own in the past, and that is what catapulted my growth and understanding of myself more than anything else. Having to rely on yourself, having to know yourself, having to take care of yourself. To make new friends, to be both strong and vulnerable; these are skills I developed much quicker because I forced myself to be brave and go out into the world alone.

TV: What advice would you give to women that want to forge a path like you did, but are scared to take the first step, the next step, or even a step alone?

MA: I don’t really like to give advice, because everyone’s paths and circumstances are so different. I try to embody what I teach and use my own life as an example. I am no different than you, or whoever is reading this right now. If I can go out into the world scared, excited, with little-to-no plan, then so can anyone else. We all are so powerful and so capable, and the only thing that has ever gotten in the way for me, is me.

So if I had to give advice, it would be this: first and foremost, heal yourself. Heal yourself and develop tools and practices that move you away from fear and lack of the ego and unite you with the abundance and guidance that is found in higher consciousness. That means living from a place of love, not taking action out of scarcity.

TV: If you could only do one peaceful practice or ritual for the rest of your life, what would it be?

MA: Meditation, 1000000%. Journaling. Practicing gratitude. Being present. Breathing deeply. Moving my body. It’s a combination of those things, because not one thing works all of the time.

TV: Similar to everything you just mentioned, music has the power to provide healing and peace. What music inspires you?

MA: Music from all over the world. I love tribal African music and sexy Latin music. I love reggae & ambient music. And I love jazz and oldies as well.

TV: Lastly, tell us one thing people don’t know about miki ash, but you wish they did.

MA: I think people look at where I am at now and don’t see the struggles that I have overcome to get here. What you are looking at is more than a decade of dedicated work to overcome eating disorders, depression, emotional and sexual abuse. I grew up in a broken home with a mom who lived off of child support and a stepmom who made it very clear she didn’t want me to be a part of the family. These things happen, and I am now able to take responsibility for my part in creating those experiences so that I was able to overcome them and teach others that they are capable of overcoming hardship themselves.
